Home Organizing – Where do I start?

Updated: Jun 20, 2020

Getting your home organized and decluttered can be overwhelming. Often people look at the mess and clutter around them and don’t act because they don’t even know where to start. One saying I’m reminded of when I think of this is, “How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.”

How does this saying translate to home organizing?

If you’re starting on your project to declutter or organize your home, start with a micro-project. Whatever you do, don’t drag the entire contents of your garage out onto the driveway one afternoon! You need to start small, or you’ll lose motivation and feel overwhelmed.

Start with something small that you can complete in a few hours. Try something like organizing your shoes or pick a chest of drawers and sort through that and tidy it up. The sense of accomplishment when you complete a small task like this will motivate you to keep going and attack another small home organizing project the next weekend or day.

The other tip is to focus on one project at a time. Don’t simultaneously start in 5 areas in your house. Remember, you can make your home worse by starting five projects and leaving them “ongoing” for months. How many times have you heard about home renovation nightmares where people strip the house and never finish it? It’s no different with home organizing here in Houston! Pick one project at a time, and don’t start another until you’ve completed each one.

If you want to get your home organized quickly, consider a professional home organizer here in Houston who can work with you to get things done quickly.
